We all know the funny cartoon that shows a character sleeping on a bed with a balloon of ZZZZZZ’s above his head. It can bring a smile to 0ur face due to the realistic humor that this scene portrays. In reality, snoring is not that funny. It is a nuisance to the person who snores as well as that person’s family members. This nuisance can make an entire household sleep deprived. What is the cause of snoring you may ask. Snoring occurs when the airway in the back of the throat narrows during sleep. As the air passes through the narrowed opening, the uvula vibrates and causes the sound we all know as snoring. Besides being loud, snoring can be a sign of sleep issues that can be detramental to a person’s health.. Not all snorers have a condition called sleep apnea, but all sleep apnea patients snore. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person’s airway will become so narrow when they sleep, that no air can pass and they stop breathing, only to be awakened by a gasp for air. In future blogs, the issue of sleep apnea will be addressed in more detail.
