How much sugar should you eat?
New guidelines from the American Heart Association recommend that women eat no more than 100 calories (25g) of added sugars per day. Men should limit their intake to no more than 150 calories (about 35.7 g).
Added sugars include sugars and syrups like high-fructose corn syrup used in cooking and processing as well as sugar added to sweeten coffee or tea. One teaspoon of sugar contains about 16 calories. On average, Americans consume and equivalent of 22 teaspoons of added sugar every day.
Sweetened beverages account for most of the added sugars in our diets. One can of regular soda has about 8 teaspoons or 130 calories!
Sugar increases the risk for obesity, its has been linked to high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and obviously dental caries!
